Why is my Samsung TV backlight is suddenly failing when turning it up?

I have Samsung 50" Smart TV, model UN50NU6900FXZC. When I tried to reset and set it up, the screen went black, but the sound remained. Turning it off for a minute and then on again temporarily fixed the issue, but the screen would eventually go black again while the sound continued.

Initially, I thought it was a power source, but I now suspect an issue with the backlight since there is a faint image visible when the screen goes black. I diagnosed this by setting the backlight to 0 in the settings, and the screen didn't go dark anymore. However, when I increased the backlight to 25, the screen turned black again after a few minutes. Turning the TV off and on temporarily resolves the issue, but the screen goes black again after a while.

I am not sure if the backlight strips are really the problem here, is there a bigger issue like the power board or the main board?

Hi @mrbean09

Initially to determine if it is the mainboard that is the problem or not is to disconnect the power to the TV and then remove the back cover and disconnect the mainboard - power board cable at the power board end. Then reconnect the power to the TV and check if the backlights turn on and stay on.

If they stay on then the mainboard may be the problem.

If they don't stay on then it may be either the power board or the backlights that is the problem.

The quickest and easiest way to isolate where it is then, is to purchase a TV backlight tester (example only) to check if the LED strips are working OK or not.

Disconnect the power to the TV and then remove the back cover from the TV and then disconnect the backlight power supply cable from the power board and then using the backlight tester you can test the individual strips in isolation from the power board as the tester supplies the power necessary to turn on the LEDs and not the power board.

If they all turn on and stay on, then they're not the problem.

Be safety aware when working in the back of the TV as there's exposed potentially lethal AC power on the power board
