Why am I having trouble booting up?

I am having trouble booting up. The screen stays black for up to 30 minutes and then a folder with a question mark shows on the screen. Could this be a hard drive issue?

Thank you for helping. I took it to Apple Store today and it wouldn't do it again, however he couldn't get the video to come on the display. He wanted to do a diagnostic tests. we feel at this point the logic video is out. I think the HD is still good. Do you have any ideas how I should retrieve the data?

@dcoburn64 absolutely. A "folder with a question mark" indicates that your computer can't find the startup disk or that there are issues with the Mac operating system. Start off by checking what Apple suggest Let us know what you find out.

You would need to buy a SATA to USB cable to retrieve the data. Here is a tried-and-true cable on Amazon: StarTech.com SATA to USB 3.0 Cable - Amazon

The HD from the Mac Mini is to be taken out as well (you can use this guide from iFixit: Mac Mini 2012 HD Replacement - iFixit).

After extracting the HD from the Mini, you will plug the SATA to USB cable to the HD and connect the drive to a Macintosh computer. Otherwise, you will not be able to read the files on it due to Apple's hard drive format (assuming you haven't wiped the HD out). From there, you can go into Finder and rummage around in the drive (just don't go into the 'System' folder). You may need a code or password if the drive is encrypted.

Let me know how it turns out! :)
