Newly installed battery peels off

Hey all,

I've changed a battery on my old mid 2015 macbook. I followed ifixit instructions carefully and used ifixit battery, but after some time the battery started flopping within the case — the adhesive wasn't working properly.

I did place additional tape (I think it was tesa), but after few weeks it came off again and battery started flopping inside the case once more.

Any recommendations on this?

Remove the battery and clean as much old adhesive as you can then use some regular all purpose glue. You don’t want anything too strong that’ll tear the battery up. All purpose actually works well. Just let it set well.

The upper case surface needs to be spotless for the adhesive pad to work properly and it does need a bit of pressure as well.

I don’t like the way Apple did things with the first Retina systems instead I use 3M’s Command adhesive strips applying two strips per cell after cleaning off all of the adhesive on the plastic sheet (leaving it attached to the battery) and uppercase. I find Goo Gone does a good job, then wipe the area again with 90% isopropyl alcohol to remove the last traces of the GooOff as it too will prevent good adhesion.

With the pull tabs to the side replacing the battery next time is easier and the foam helps going across an uneven surface.

Tape although the accepted right answer, is actually not as good as cheap all purpose glue imo!

Why?

all purpose glue For one adheres better to old adhesive and surface impurities on the battery itself meaning less cleaning/ battery stress, also giving an extra layer of pierce protection cushioning on the underside of the battery by being able to leave old adhesive in situ , battery removal is easier , lastly it’s slightly more shock proof having a more gel like state when set. This isn’t an Apple approved or scientifically proven fact just an opinion based observation from many years of trial and error with various glue products/ tapes.

@basementdax - Glue is messy and gets into places you don’t want glued. Depending on the glue you often make a bigger mess as it dries making a hard blob. I’ve had to turn jobs away as it was so bad.

The 3M adhesive approach (nondrying) is less work and less mess. And when the battery needs to be replaced a lot easier to do. I’ve been preaching this approach since 2013, in fact I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple stole the idea as they first used the pull stripes in the phones and then started using them in the MacBook Pro’s from 2018

Yes in a battery replacement I completely agree no question. If your keeping the same battery then I would go for all purpose glue, only where old adhesive was on the battery and nowhere near the board or any components , careful application no question! 👍

Tape is also glue with equal amounts on either side and plastic in the middle making it less effective.

@basementdax - Double sided tape is not ineffective! Have you tried to take out a MacBook Pro battery? The grip is quite amazing! The issue is what Apple does in their Factory is very different than what most of us can achieve out in the field. This where experience matters. I’m an engineer and have worked in hardware development having to deal with some of these issues. I’ve done this a long time and I don’t have failures and I often get repeat customers so I can see what worked and what failed.
