In June 2017 Apple updated its 13" MacBook Air with a newer Broadwell Intel Core i5 processor, resulting in slightly increased performance and battery life.

Replace the LCD case - Is it worth the risk?

I had a bit of a lucky day, I recently bought a VERY VERY cheap and nice 2017 MBA i7 model, issue was 'no power', they said they took it to a repair guy and it needed a new I/O board.... So I replaced it and it started up absolutely fine. I checked the system info (pictured below SURPRISE) and checked the OLD battery with our 'trusted' coconut and it was at 1734 Service and DEAD 0 capacity.... New battery is now installed and it booted up nicely. So there are NO ISSUES with the unit whatsoever. YIPPEE! (Turns out the I/O board was OK as I tested it on another unit & just the battery was shot HAHA)

ANYWAY The Display case has some BIG ENGRAVING on it (Previous owners name and address etc).

I have seen some YT videos on how to do it but I do not think I can remove it without leaving some kind of evidence (Won't look nice).... Obviously a clear color case will not hide the engraving or the evidence of the engraving having been removed. Nobody is going to buy this the way it is and I don't have another complete display to replace it with. Do I attempt to replace ONLY the casing by removing the LCD (90% chance it will break as they always seem to do as I am familiar with the process & the care needed regarding the back sheets etc etc)....OR, does anyone have some other solutions? It would help if I can find THE EXACT silver color Apple uses then I could simply paint it again if I find a way to remove this engraving, stickers are not an option unless I 'wrap it (Which maybe a good idea thinking about it) or what do you suggest @danj as I know he will love to answer this one ;)

I'd be tempted to treat it like body work on a car: Fill, sand and paint.

Something like JB Weld or perhaps even Bondo to level the inscription back to the same height as the surface of the case, sand it smooth then paint it over. Obviously you'll mask the Apple logo on the back.

It may take some experimentation, but my guess is you can probably find something pretty close to the original color. Since you'll be repainting the entire top you don't have to be 100% on the match, just close enough that the edges won't show a jarring difference between the top and bottom case when it's closed.

I am going to try this method 1st on an old battered and dented case https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aj9-VZv9... to see if it damaged the finish.

@livfe The video depends on the fact that the etching on the iPod appears to be more of a chemical etch than a CNC drill type etch. As such, it only goes a few microns into the surface of the chrome and can be sanded off.

I was thinking of the latter kind of etching, but I realize I don't know what yours looks like. Can you get us a closeup picture of what the etching looks like? Obviously we'll want you to keep from exposing too much private information; maybe just focus on a city or a first name.

@dadibrokeit Yes of course, I will add it to the question shortly. The etching itself does not feel very deep, I have asked the previous owner but he didn't know.... 150 & 250 wet & dry sandpaper to the test I guess.

I followed the video on how to remove engraving and it worked a treat.

2 hours of rubbing away and polishing and it is 99.9% gone! Magic!

Nice, so apparently the lid isn't painted, but we're looking at basically bare metal, right?

@dadibrokeit I am not sure, but the finish still remains the same as the rest of the shell, it hasn't removed any 'paint' as such.... the engraving is still there but very faint, I will rub it more but I think the engraving is just on top of the anodized finish that Apple does.
