How to get past unexpected error after factory reset

I had factory reset my laptop in hopes it would be better and now it's stuck on the logo on "unexpected error" and keeps telling me I have to restart it and does the same thing again and again.

Hi @leximyers

Which logo is it stopping on, Lenovo or Windows?

If Windows then try the following and check:

Turn off the laptop if on, then turn on the laptop and when it starts to boot into Windows, press and hold the Power button operated to force stop the laptop.

Do this 3 times in a row i.e. start > boot > force stop > start > boot > force stop > start etc.

On the 3rd attempt it should boot into the Windows Recovery Environment menus.

If it does then select Troubleshooting > Advanced > Startup repair and follow the prompts.

Since you were trying to reset your PC you could also select Reset this PC but ensure that you select the correct option next e.g. keep my files or remove everything depending on whether you wish to retain or delete your data.

If the above doesn't fix the problem it may be due to a corrupted Recovery partition so try the following:

You can create a Recovery USB drive from any other known working Win10 or Win11 PC. All you need is a 8GB USB flashdrive and 1-2 hours of time.

In the host PC go to Control panel > Recovery > Create a recovery drive and follow the prompts.

Once you have the USB recovery disc, insert it into the laptop and start the laptop and then press the Esc key followed by the F9 key to enter the Boot Device options menu and make the USB drive as the 1st boot option.

The laptop should then boot off the USB drive (and not the laptop's HDD/SSD drive) into the WRE menus.

Follow the procedure as above to hopefully fix the problem in your laptop.

It sounds like your OS is corrupted. Was your drive quite full? As often you can encounter issues with SSD drives when there is not enough free cells. What does the documentation say on restoring the system? You may need to download a fresh copy from the Lenovo.

@leximyers this sounds like a BIOS issue since it starts right at the splash screen. Start off by turning your computer off and disconnecting all peripherals. REmove the power adapter. Next push and hold the start button for about 30 - 60 sec. Now plug your power supply back in and start your computer. See if that changed anything.

Next you will need to check if you can still enter the BIOS. Turn your computer off. Next turn it back on. Immediately and repeatedly press F2 or (Fn+F2). Accessing the BIOS may take multiple attempts. If you can still access the BIOS, try to change the boot order and use a bootable USB drive etc. See if that makes a difference.

If you can't, then the issue could be a failed BIOS. Check this Lenovo site for more information on how to try to update the BIOS. Let us know what you find out.

You did not tell us why you did the reset. You mentioned that "hopes it would be better" but did not tell us what it did. It may be an indicator of what has happened.

Hold on to this Lenovo Yoga C740 14IML Hardware Maintenance Manual just in case we need to dig deeper.
