Repair information for the Asus ZenBook laptop series.

Asus ZenBook UM431DLaptop keeps getting stuck in automatic repair loop

A few months ago, my laptop started occasionally getting stuck in an automatic repair loop. I was usually able to get out of it using some combination of system restore, uninstalling updates, and just turning it off and letting it sit overnight. I have no idea which of those was the solution but it worked. Then about a month ago, it got stuck and nothing would work. I eventually used a boot USB to get into the hard drive and transfer my files off, then reinstalled Windows 10 via USB. I figured that would fix it as I thought the cause was an update that got half installed before my laptop died.

Last night, I left my laptop closed and plugged in (but not powered down) for a few hours and when I came back, it had brought up the automatic repair screen again and nothing so far has worked to get back into Windows. Seeing as I completely reinstalled Windows 10, I no longer think it it's just an issue with my copy of windows and instead either the windows updates themselves don't work with my laptop, or there's a hardware issue. I can get back in the same way I did before, but it's a pain in the ass. Ideally I'd like to prevent this from happening in the future. How would I go about this? Is it even worth it or would it be cheaper/easier to take it to a repair shop?

I was able to manually update the laptop so there are no updates pending, but when restarted it still does not want to boot into Windows properly. I think that narrows it down to a hardware issue. How do I figure out what the issue is so I can fix it?

Please expand on what you mean by "....still does not want to boot into Windows properly."?

Does it boot fully into Windows safe mode OK?

tarafından

@jayeff It will usually boot into safe mode if I select it in the startup repair menu, though the time I had to reinstall Windows it wouldn't boot into safe mode and eventually wouldn't even open the startup repair menu. Also in the time between my first post and yesterday's comment, I was able to boot into windows and use it with no problems for a couple weeks, keeping it in sleep mode when not using it. The only other issue I've noticed is sometimes the headphone jack stops working, but if I can get the computer to restart it will fix that.

Just some things that I'd check:

If it doesn't boot at all, i.e. starts but doesn't start to load Windows check if you can get into BIOS OK and then see if the SSD that the OS is installed on, is being shown as detected or not in the BIOS menus.

Booting OK in safe mode but not in normal mode usually indicates a driver problem. Since you've updated all of them that rules that out.

If it boots into Windows normal mode OK try turning off fast startup (should be the same in your laptop) and check if it consistently works OK now

If you can boot in Windows normal mode OK try running an sfc /scannow command and also all the DISM check health options to make sure that the installation is OK

As a final check to try and isolate where it might be, try running a "live" Linux OS e.g. Ubuntu Lite etc from a bootable USB flashdrive and check if it boots into the OS and works OK. You don't have to install it, just run it. (There's an option to install or just test when you first start it).

If Linux works OK then there's a problem with Windows and the laptop. if it also has problems then it's hardware.

It starts to boot Windows but gets to a loading screen with the Asus logo and the spinning dots and won't load further. The BIOS loads fine and the SSD is visible in the boot menu.

Only sometimes will it boot into safe mode. This morning it got stuck on that loading screen (it tried to run a new update and got stuck when it tried to reboot) and after I tried a system restore which did nothing, I tried safe mode and that also wouldn't boot. But turning it off and back on got me back to normal Windows.

I shut off fast startup a few days ago but it clearly didn't fix it.

I just ran those commands and I'll see if it helps, but I've done that several times trying to get back into my system before and it didn't seem to fix it either.

I used Hiram's Boot CD (actually a USB) to get my files off of it before and it loaded fine despite being Windows 11 based. All of the system-checking programs on it also didn't find any hardware problems. I'll try live Linux once finals week is over and I have more time.
