MacBook Pro 2017 Screen Flickering

The problem started with my battery not holding a charge. I'd shut it down with, say, 70% battery, then switch it on the next day, and it would show 70% and shut off if it wasn't plugged in.

I tried a couple of things to try and resolve this which led to the screen starting to flicker erratically. It could be related or not. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I have tried everything and it doesn't happen when my mate logged in remotely and also in safe mode.

I saw this thread (2017 MacBook Pro screen flickering) where someone had the same issue but someone said it may be a bad T-CON board or the battery is goosed!

Obviously I don't want to replace the screen and/or battery if it's possibly none of them.

Is there any way to diagnose this property and stop this from happening?

Hey guys, thanks so much for all your efforts thus far.

So we seem to have narrowed it down to T-CON logic being the culprit. How does one go about testing/checking this?

@robertrobg59705 - So the test using the external display was clean then? That’s the test as the signal from the GPU logic goes either internally or externally via some switch logic.

Sadly, that means the display assembly will need to be replaced.

I would start off installing CoconutBattery and posting a snapshot of the Apps main window here so we can see the condition of your battery.

As for the display that’s an independent issue of an old battery. Here the issue could be a known issue with the backlight ribbon cable breaking down. Using a phone take a snapshot of the issue or a short video if that is better for us to see the problem.

@robertrobg59705 - I’m wondering if this system is worth the expense.

First off you battery is well past its prime! While some batteries will make 1,000 cycles most don’t! And as Batteries Health is also poor this system needs a new battery! But before you do that I think you need to verify if the display is healthy first, as I fear that’s also failing you or if the logic board is the issue.

You’ll need to connect an external display, keyboard & mouse to the system and after turning it on, close the lid using the external keyboard & mouse and the external display.

Does it still wink out like your video? If it does that’s a logic board issue within the GPU logic. If the external is properly displaying an image then that’s a bad display MacBook Pro 13" Retina (Late 2016-2017) Display Assembly and here’s its guide MacBook Pro 13" Touch Bar 2017 Screen Replacement between these two parts you’re spending over $550 that’s a getting expensive! A logic board is around $400 if that’s the issue.

Hi @livfe, I'm not sure what you mean.

My friend logged in remotely and the screen did not flicker for him. Trying to source an HDMI>USB-C so I can test in on my TV.

I think it's a software issue as it works fine in safe mode and remotely. Also, plan on replacing the battery.

@life - “If the external is properly displaying an image then that’s a bad internal display” the internal is no accessible under this test as it’s closed in Clamshell mode.

@robertrobg59705 - Accessing the system remotely does offer hope, it fails to test the GPU logic it’s self. This is not a software issue.

I assumed that something is wrong with the display ribbons before, but after what Dan told me I think that's unlikely. As Dan mentioned it's probably a GPU problem. The problem could also be either be an unstable voltage output from the battery. I will stick with the opinion that you need a new battery though. It's holding less charge than an Apple Magic Mouse.

The flickering effect we see here is a video distortion issue which is either a T-CON issue or the GPU logic failure. Unlike the 15” models which offered a dedicated AMD GPU. Here the built-in graphics the CPU (iGPU), but even the iGPU within the CPU is used as well within the start (desktop) only when better graphics are called for does the better GPU becomes active.

As the system works in Safe Mode aims me to display’s T-CON logic (part of the display) but I want be sure. Here Safe Mode uses a lower scan rate than the normal modes which also removes the displays data ribbon cable connections.

I looked at the video again and i think you're right about this. I don't really have a lot of experience around that, so I just assumed that something is wrong with the display. my bad

Hey guys, thanks so much for all your comments and feedback, I truly appreciate it.

Just to let you all know, I disconnected the battery and plugged the charger in and the flickering stopped so I’m going to replace he battery myself. I found one for £35 on eBay.
