Auto defrost is not working

Here's the RFG298HD service manual.

Go to p.51 (52 of 105 pdf) to view the self-diagnostic function during normal operation procedure and check if any error codes are shown.

Reason for trying this is because manual defrost may override any inputs that are used by the control board to determine that a defrost cycle is required. It just checks that the defrost circuit is working OK, not that a defrost cycle is required..

Which compartment is not defrosting at all or is it just not defrosting that often?

According to the RFG298HD Fast Track troubleshooting guide, the refrigerator compartment defrosts every 6-11 hours (varies according to the conditions)¹and both the refrigerator and freezer compartments defrost every 12-22 hours (varies according to the conditions)¹ - see p.3

Basically at a minimum the refrigerator compartment should be defrosted twice approx. every 24 hours and the freezer compartment only once

¹ The refrigerator uses what is known as the adaptive defrost cycle method instead of the accumulated compressor run time or the simpler fixed time period methods. With the adaptive defrost cycle method the time interval between defrost cycles is determined by how often and for how long the doors have been opened and the ambient temperature where the refrigerator is located. It is considered to be more energy efficient than the other two methods.
