Quickest way to find out why the light is on is to get the vehicle's OBDII port scanned using an appropriate scantool to see what DTC code has been logged.
The code will tell you what the problem is.
In the USA larger auto parts retail chains, e.g. AutoZone, PepBoys, O'Reilly etc, will do this for free apparently.
