Get the vehicle's OBDII port scanned with an appropriate scantool to check if any DTC codes (Diagnostic Troubleshooting Codes) have been logged.
If there are any, then the code will tell you what the problem is.
If you live in the USA, major auto parts retail chain stores e.g. AutoZone, PepBoys, O'Reilley's etc, will do this for free apparently.
