Device Will Not Turn On
My Amazon Fire does not respond when I press the power button and/or doesn't display the low battery icon.
Amazon Fire is Not Charged
Plug your Amazon Fire into a power source using the provided adapter and micro USB charging cable. Let the battery icon display full charge before attempting to turn your device on.
Faulty Charging Cable/ Power Adapter
If the battery icon does not display when plugged in, your charger may be faulty. Ensure that your wall power outlet is working properly. If the outlet is functional but your charger is not responding to your device, your charger itself may be the problem. Test this by plugging your charger into another device of similar type. If this other device is similarly unresponsive to the charger, the issue is in your charger and you will have to buy a new USB cable/USB wall adapter.
Faulty Battery
If you have tested the charger for your Amazon Fire and it is functional but your device still isn't turning on, your battery may be faulty, Your battery may need to be replaced.
Faulty Power Button
If your device responds to the battery charger and is fully charged but still won't respond to the power button press, your Amazon Fire may have a broken power button due to a connection issue. This part can only be replaced by replacing the entire motherboard.
Faulty Motherboard
If your tablet is still unresponsive to a charger or battery replacement, you may have a faulty motherboard that needs to be replaced.
Screen Unresponsive to Touch
My Amazon Fire does not respond to touch screen commands.
Device Operating Continuously for too Long
Your device may need to be rebooted due to prolonged continuous use. Reboot the tablet by holding down the power button. If you can not select the power off option on the screen, hold down the power button for 40 seconds and then wait 10 more seconds before attempting to power the device on again.
Physical Screen Interference
If your Amazon Fire is not responding to touch commands there may be external factors obstructing the device screen. Ensure that your device screen is clean by wiping the device face with a soft cloth wipe (e.g. eye glass wipe). Avoid using your device in extreme warm or cold conditions; these conditions may influence the functionality of your device screen. Try to remove any device accessories such as protective screens or cases when testing your device functionality;these can obstruct touch capabilities.
If your Amazon Fire's screen is cracked or shattered, this can also affect the tablet's ability to sense your movements and thus it needs to be replaced. here is a guide for that.
Device Software Out of Date
Your device may be unresponsive if your tablet does not have up to date software. Instructions on how to update your device software can be found here.
Sensitivity Sensor Broken
If you have tried all of the steps and you are still having issues, the sensitivity sensor or digitizer on your Amazon Fire's LCD panel may be broken and will need to be replaced.
Device Cannot Connect to a Wireless Network
I can't connect my device to a wireless network.
Airplane Mode Turned On
If you can't connect your device to a wireless network, the problem may be that your device is in airplane mode. To turn off airplane mode, swipe down on your device screen and tap the button that says airplane mode. The button will change to reflect that airplane mode has been turned off. More help on this issue can be found here.
Device Operating Continuously for too Long
First restart the device by holding down the power button and selecting to turn off. If you do not see the option to turn your device off on your screen, hold down the power button on your tablet for 40 seconds until it turns off, then turn it on again.
Outdated Device Software
If restarting your device does not solve your issue, ensure that you are running the latest software on your device. If your device does not have up to date software try to upgrade your tablet software to a higher version. Instructions on how to update your device software can be found here.
Misconfigured Wireless Network
If you are still having issues, your WiFi connection may be the problem. If you are able to alter the settings on the wireless network you are trying to connect to, try these several steps:
- Power cycling your wireless router. Instructions found here.
- Changing the type of security on your router from WEP to WPA2.
- Changing the setting on your router to disable 802.11n and limit it to 802.11g.
- Changing the settings on your Amazon Fire tablet to limit its wireless speed to 54Mb/second.
Additional help on this issue can be found in the link here.
No Audio Through Built-In Speaker
A video is playing, but there's no sound.
Volume Level Muted
First ensure that there is nothing plugged into the headphone port as this will disable the device built-in speaker. If this isn't the issue, test to make sure your Amazon Fire is not muted. You can do this by simply toggling the volume buttons on the top of the device. When you press the volume buttons you should be able to see the volume bar move on your device screen.
Faulty Speaker
If the Amazon Fire responds to the button presses and displays the volume level changes and still produces no sound coming from the outer speaker, the speaker itself may be faulty and will need to be replaced.
Faulty Volume Buttons
If your device is not responding to the volume button presses and is stuck on a volume setting, there may be an issue with the buttons themselves and they will need to be replaced. Unfortunately due to the nature of production, the buttons are non-replaceable by themselves and thus the whole motherboard would need to be replaced.
No Audio Through Headphone Jack
My headphones are plugged into my device but I can't hear anything.
Headphones Incorrectly Inserted
After you plug your headphones into your Amazon Fire, make sure that the audio on the device is set at a level high enough for you to hear. Do this by toggling the volume buttons on the top of the tablet. If this isn't the issue, make sure that your headphones are properly plugged into your Amazon Fire. If you are having trouble plugging in your headphones, try to remove any cases or protective coverings that may be interfering with your headphones.
Faulty Headphones
Try testing your headphones on other devices to see if you experience the same problem. If your headphones do not work on any other devices your headphones are the problem and will need to be replaced.
Dirty Headphone Jack
Headphone jacks have a tendency to be dust/dirt collectors simply due to their shape. Pick up a can of compressed air (this can be found at any local hardware store) and spray the compressed air into the headphone jack-hole, making sure to stay about 2-3 inches way from the actual hole. Shine a flashlight into the hole to see if there are any obvious obstructions. If you can see an obvious obstruction and the compressed air is not working, try using a bent paper clip (or any similar object) and very carefully fish the obstruction out.
If you do use this method make sure to be extremely careful that you do not scratch or damage the inside on the audio jack.
Defective Audio Jack
If you tried all of the steps above and you are still experiencing issues, the problem may be your audio jack itself. Your device audio jack may be faulty and will need to be replaced. As the headphone jack is directly connected to the motherboard, you can not replace it separately and thus have to replace the entire motherboard.
Trouble Syncing Device to Online Amazon Account
My Amazon Fire won't connect to my Amazon account.
WiFi Network Connection Issue
Before you begin, make sure that your device is connected to a wireless network. You will see a WiFi icon or 4G icon with signal bars near the battery indicator if your device is connected to a wireless network. Help on connecting your tablet to a wireless network can be found here.
Device Synchronization is Disabled
Go to www.Amazon.com and sign into your online amazon account. Once you are signed in, navigate to the Manage Your Content and Devices section under the Your Account tab and go to Settings. Ensure that Device Synchronization is turned on for your Amazon Fire tablet.
Device Content Out of Date
Your tablet may be running an out of date software. Swipe down from the top of your device screen and tap Settings, and then tap Sync Device to ensure that your device is synced with the latest updates and content downloads. Instructions on how to update your device to its latest software can be found here.
Invalid Payment Method
Your payment method on your device may have been updated since you last purchased content on your device. This could prevent the purchased content from syncing or opening on your device. Go to www.Amazon.com and sign into your online amazon account. Once you are signed in, navigate to the Manage Your Content and Devices section under the Your Account tab and select Settings and under Payment Settings, select Edit Payment Method to view or update your 1-Click payment settings.

I have a 5th generation tablet and it’s not charging. I can’t tell if I need to fix the battery or if the charger is the problem. I plug in the charger to the device, and instead of charging, it drains the battery. Plugged the charger into another device and it worked just fine. I tried the restarting method and it still does the same thing, what do I do?
