Dishwasher not draining, or draining too slowly? Whirlpool dishwashers are susceptible to a range of issues that can cause this problem—some simple to fix, some not. Check the following items in order to identify and correct the issue.
Cause 1: Incomplete wash cycle
Check to make sure the last wash cycle completed properly—if your dishwasher has a “Clean” indicator light, it should be illuminated. If not, the wash cycle may have been interrupted. Close the door and press the Start button.
Cause 2: Drain is clogged
Try running the garbage disposal (if you have one)—if it shares the same drain as the dishwasher, this can prevent the dishwasher from draining.
Cause 3: Drain hose is kinked
Check the drain hose that runs from the bottom of your dishwasher to the drain pipe (usually below the sink). Make sure it’s not pinched or kinked. If necessary, replace it with a new hose.
Cause 4: Drain hose is clogged
Remove the drain hose end from the nipple it's connected to below the sink or disposal, put the end in a bucket, then fill and drain the dishwasher to see if a garbage clog will simply blow out. If that doesn't work, but you see a small dribble of water, you may have to pull the dishwasher out and remove the drain hose in order clean it out or replace it. (Remember, there's still water in the unit—so put a drain pan under it before removing the hose.)
Cause 5: Garbage disposal incorrectly installed
If you recently installed a new garbage disposal, make sure the knock-out plug was removed. It's right inside the nipple where the drain hose from the dishwasher attaches to the disposal. If it’s not removed, the dishwasher can’t drain properly.
Cause 6: Stuck check valve
The check valve is located underneath the dishwasher, just before the drain hose. It’s a one-way valve, allowing water to drain but not return to the dishwasher. Remove the drain hose from the dishwasher (remembering to put a drain pan underneath) and check to make sure the valve is clean and opens correctly.
Cause 7: Failed drain pump
If there are no obstructions to the drain system and your dishwasher is still filling with water, you may need to replace the pump.
