Upgrading my HDD to SSHD or SSD?

I'm about to upgrade my HDD and want some help, I've read some of the threads about this on the forum, but still have some questions.

So basically I want to get a SSD or a SSHD disk to run my OS X 10.9.5 (13F34) on.

So should i/could i get a

And replace my HDD with or should i/could i get a SSD and use it with my old one?

Or just replace my HDD with a SSD drive?

What do you recommend?

Thanks in advance /Linus

The one for one swap may not be the best way :-)

Sure, you could swap out the current HD with a SSHD which is the easiest way to gain more storage and the benefit of a deep SSD cache. Swapping out the HD for a SSD could also be done but there are some issues here. First you need a special cable to replace the internal thermal sensor and a 2.5" to 3.5" frame to hold the SSD as they are physically smaller.

Frankly, I think doing the dual drive setup is the best here! Here you hang on to your current HD but add in the SSD with a bit of work you can then make the SSD the boot drive holding your OS and your Apps. Saving your HD for the deep storage for your music, videos and other files.

Bottom line here adding the SSD as a second drive is a win - win!

Review this IFIXIT guide: Installing iMac Intel 27" EMC 2429 Dual Hard Drive Kit. While the guide states dual HD in fact it could be a SSD instead.

Thanks! Yeah i read that i couldnt use the SSHD on my iMac because it is only compatible on an older iMac so i think i'm gonna go with the dual HDD.

Also which SSD drive would you recommend? Do i really need 1tb or will 500gb suffice?

I'm choosing between the Crucial MX200 or the BX100 or samsung EVO-

No thats not correct any HD or SSHD will work in your system as long as you get this cable: OWC In-line Digital Thermal Sensor for iMac 2011 Hard Drive Upgrade

As to the size of the SSD: Look at how much space your current OS & Apps are taking for space times this by ten as a good ballpark if you are setting up a dual drive. If you are replacing the current HD for the SSD you'll need to add to this for the files you what to have. You should leave 1/4 to 1/3 of the SSD free (more is you have a smaller SSD). Basically we install either a 256 or 512GB SSD as the second drive on your systems. As to who's we use we standardized on Samsung SSD's. But, others are just as good. Don't overbuy as the bigger drives are expensive!

Okay Thanks again Dan. You have been extremely helpful.

@Sunny - Not everyone has the deep pockets to upgrade with large SSD's. As to going with a dual SSD setup doesn't buy you that much as the bottleneck of the North Bridge chip in this system really can't offer two concurrent data streams at the full data rate the SSDs could offer. Think of it this way: Having a race car is nice, but, it won't get you to work on the streets any faster than what than a regular car can do given the streets design and the other traffic. So why are you buying a race car here? Stick with the HD & SSD combo as the best setup for most people. If you are a very heavy graphics designer then you'll need more performance, but you would be working with a much more powerful system to start with (i.e. Mac Pro).

Hi to all,

I would greatly appreciate if someone could answer my following question: I have a late 2012 iMac 27" and would like to replace the mechanical HD with an SSHD. Can someone tell me if I need a special cable or can I simply use SSD Fan Control or a similar app to reduce speed of fans?

Also I have an older iMac 21" late 2009 and have got an SSD in there and running SSD Fan Control, and that is working fine. What if I were to put an SSHD in there? Can I use the same software or do I then need a special cable?
