Is this a new card reader? If so maybe download the latest driver from the manufacturer. Usually found in support or downloads section of the company website. Also is this a new card? If so double check that it's type is compatible with the reader. Often newer versions of common card types are not supported by existing readers.

Another thought is that the card reader is not replaceable unless you replace the entire motherboard as it is soldered onto motherboard itself. Easier solution is to buy a portable, USB 2.0 or 3.0 multi-card reader.
