Is the Magsafe plugged directly on the wall socket or a into a surge protector bar?

tarafından

Also if you have any less than a 85 what charger it will over heat very easily with this computer

tarafından

Mine is plugged in surge protector bar and getting very hot after 20-30min.

Call Apple themseleves and let them know, each apple Mac comes with a 3 year limited warranty, if they won't do anything ask to speak to a senior advisor, if they still does not work ask for a one time repair exception and if nothing please take it another place either certifed for Apple repair or not, I suggest certiefed because I am Apple Repair certifed and this sounds like a hardware failure and you can take it to a local Apple Store and tell them, more than likely we will run some tests and either replace or repair the product at no cost at all, if you have any other questions, don't be afraid to contact me.

Your device is still under warranty. Before you do ANYTHING to repair this machine or it's components, internal or external... Call Apple. They will replace anything that is not operating properly that is no fault of yours, but a fault of the equipment.

I totally agree with Brandon on this one. After you get it back, it you see a hint of a problem, take out the Extended Apple Care for an additional two years of warranty.

I have this problem too. When I got this problem I searched about this and saw many users had this issue. Seems like Apple doesn't care about their faulty charger. I doubt that do they really have a proper engineering team to fix this issue . I felt bad now being a mac user first time by seeing this issue persisting for a very long period of time.

Extending warranty doesn't make sense if you get the same designed charger again, because anyways its going to get the same issue in few days.

Rajkumar,

We have 100's of these chargers in use without any issues do to a poorly designed charger.

What we do see is people wrapping the cords into a knot and then expect the dam thing to work! We glued down the butterflies and put instead a velcro wire wrap and trained out employees to loosely coil the cord.

The other thing we do is make sure the site offices have UPS's so the power is clean and they all have small surge suppressors for the road.

Just to be clear here these same issues are present on every laptop made! From Dell & HP I've seen them fail in the same way - User error!

tarafından

Ok, if it is user error, please tell me what to do now. A new Apple 85W MagSafe 2 Power Adapter lists for $79. This is my second MagSafe 2 adapter. I replaced the first one because the cord basically unraveled (I was told by the apple repair guy that I was the cause of the cord unraveling because I disconnected the charger by tugging the cord). I did not note the connection getting warm. This new adapter was quite warm from the beginning but I still could touch it. Now it gets so hot I can not touch the connector! I do not want to revisit cord unraveling so when the charge is complete, I flick the connector with my finger! I frequently clean the magnet because it collects up tiny flakes of metal that prevent any connection. I notice that two of the five connection points have darkened. The gold plating is still there, just under the dark crusty looking stuff. What can I do short of buying a new adapter? BTW, at this point, warrantee is not available and I always use a good surge suppressor.

@scyghost7 - You may need a new DC-In Board What is your exact model?

Also there are many fake MagSafe chargers now flooding the market! So make sure you do get a real one! Best to go to an Apple Store or authorized reseller. The cord issue was one of the tell-tale signs of a fake charger!

I found a probable cause and solution! Once I was sure there was no warrantee in affect

The over heating seems to come from the MagSafe connection shorting out due to corrosion build up. I used a hard plastic picker to remove as much of the corrosion as possible.

Also, I took small pieces of tape and pressed them into the recessed area to remove small pieces of metal that had begun to collect to the magnet preventing a tight connection of the electrical points.

When I was no longer able to get good clean points, I found just the MagSafe connector and cord on Amazon for about 10% of the original price!

I used but joint crimp connectors and shrink tubes to assemble everything! Now I keep a small piece of gaffers tape over the recessed area to keep metal bits from collecting to the magnet

I bought mine refurbished. They would not send the grounding part of the cord, just the box and small diameter cord. They said they had had a problem with them heating up when used as a unit.

A couple of times I have forgotten and plugged into an extension cord (heavy duty -12g) and OUCH too hot.

Using only the square plugged into the wall & connected with the magsafe I haven't had it get overly hot.

@nan_c - Check your house wiring you have a bad ground service. Get an outlet checker or call an electrician to check the outlet/s you use for your system as well as check the buildings grounding service from the breaker panel to your ground point (copper water pipe exiting, copper rods in the ground). You may have a a bad cord or motor in your house which is dumping power to ground which then comes back in your charger.

tarafından

All good. It doesn't overheat if I use it as instructed. Seems that it was a MacBook pro 2015 issue (per double dex. the refirb guys)

I was just sharing my experience when I ran across this previous post. Not having a problem.

tarafından

@nan_c - You're just avoiding the problem not addressing it.

Another year has gone without any problems. That is just me! Not suggesting that anyone use non apple anything! I do not use the 3 prong cord that goes to the cube. I just plug the cube- non apple (2 prong 85w) into the wall... no extensions (or it will heat up) Again, I am following the instructions of the refurb. company from which I originally purchased. Still haven't had my battery replaced either! Everything is fine.

tarafından

2024 ! Still works great. The key is not using the extension. Have never had a problem and didn't opt to get the battery replaced. N/A now - have a new one. The newer M series MBP (first one I tried and returned) had some kind of electrical discharge when it was plugged in and 100% charged. (support said it was normal). eh! Got another. If zapping me with an uncomfortable discharge is "normal" I am glad my second attempt on M series ... not normal. No shocky! BTW - I would rather not have a high powered fast charger however. I want my battery to last ... not charge fast!

What heats up connectors? Poor connections caused by high resistance. That drops voltage and produces heat. It can be caused by corroded, loose contacts, or bad connections like bad welds or solder joints. Troubleshoot those causes.

A dirty contact within the MagSafe connector is a common issue. Cleaning with a dampened Cotton swab (Q-Tip) with Isopropyl alcohol or kitchen cleaner, you may need to scrub them with a fresh pink pencil eraser.

Using a knockoff charger is the next issue. Its almost impossible to tell the real from the fakes! Make sure you only get a replacement from Apple directly. Most sold on Amazon or eBay are knockoffs (even if they tell you otherwise)!

@danj Connectors don't heat up because they are on knock off chargers. Knock off chargers heat up because they are not designed (or maybe not designed at all) to supply their listed optput. All chargers will warm up. The new GaN chargers are a lot more efficient and therefore warm a lot less. If the CHARGER gets hot enough to burn fingers, then toss it. Get a GaN charger or regular charger rated at more current than you require.

tarafından

@ruggb - Life isn’t so simple! GaN chargers are much better for sure. But you won’t find one for this MacBook as it’s too old.

Next, any connection can heat up as it’s often the most resistive part in the circuit. But why? This is often when to much current is flowing! The knockoff chargers don’t regulate their power correctly, which is why we don’t recommend them.

I speak from many years of Mac repair experience and I also designed computer gear at two major network hardware companies. Take the time to review my info card.

tarafından

@danj Obviously, a charger must have a mating connector for the device.

Chargers do not regulate the power, they regulate their voltage. The current I, which makes the P>P=EI, is drawn by the load. If the charger is hot, then too much current is being drawn. That means there may be something wrong with the load, or the charger is not suited for the job. It may have bogus specs, or it may be wrongly chosen for the task. There are plenty of garbage products, even from mfg like Land Rover, and there are plenty of great and bad knock offs. But I refuse to pay for a name , but I don't mind if you do.

I speak from being a BSEE, with 60 years experience in many places including on the Apollo tracking ships, my radio/TV/Appliance repair shop, extra class HAM radio license, and computer design, build, and repair experience going back to the Altair 8800. I think that was 1974.

tarafından

@ruggb - Your still on the wrong track here. The way a Lithium Ion battery is charged requires a BMC which communicates to the charger.

The word >Power< was not to get into the weeds on what transpires. The truth is >Current< not voltage.

Remember we are not trying to re-invent the MacBook Pro’s charger we are trying to play in Apples sand box! The requirements of the system dictates the charger, and I have yet to see an Apple charger be as deadly as the knock offs. Remember they are not UL tested and the certs they mark on their product are bogus! Bottom line crap so that the end here.

Take it back. When you get a new one don't leave it unattended it's a possible fire hazard! But try telling Apple that! I shall be ditching all Apple products ASAP!

Ray - Lets not throw the baby out with the water!

The issue is not Apple! It’s the knockoff chargers! Trust me I know. The engineering firm I was supporting had one of their staff forget their charger, he went to a local store to pickup a charger as he had a presentation in the morning.

Went back to the hotel plugged his system in and went to dinner. Came back to the sight of the fire equipment and the fire brigade in the process of dealing with a fire. He was able to get to the front desk getting informed his room is where the fire was! Them gave him another room for the night, the next morning he was able to get his now smokey cloths and his other items.

We inspected the system which wasn’t to badly burnt as it was on the desk slightly a way from the charger which was a charred mess! In the end this cheap charger cost the company a bit over 3 million!

As much as I don’t like paying the Apple tax. 3 million is way to much too risk! Only get the charger from a real Apple Store or off of Apples web site. Amazon & eBay are mostly knockoffs which will hurt your system or worse!

Check the URL’s I posted above for more details.
