Volume Control Knob Acting Strange

My Pioneer VSX-D608 receiver (from 1999!) is having a small issue with its volume knob. When I twist the knob, sometimes the volume increases a little and then stops, sometimes it will go the opposite direction, and sometimes it does not change whatsoever. This is a video of the behavior. It seems random, but I can get it sometimes to adjust correctly if I twist the very, very slow. Adjusting the volume with the remote works fine, audio/video functions work fine, everything but the volume dial works perfectly. Is there anything I can do? Or am I stuck with the remote to change the volume?

My vsx d509s goes straight to high volume when I turn it on. The volume control has no effect on the volume, and it does this on all speaker outputs.

Hi I have a pioneer elite vsx-lx503 and the volume keeps going all the way up to max how or what can I do to fix it ?

the balance button is stuck on mine so the sound is stuck all the way to the left when i use the headphone port

I have a dual media player digital reciever model DXRM57BT. The control knob controls all audio settings it works fine when its pushed in and switches from say bass to treble but when I turn it to adjust it acts crazy sometimes or doesnt work at all. I turn it up it goes down randomly. What can I do?. I tried to get to the little board behind the knob but there is a plastic cover in the way I cant remove. But I see the small square board thru it..how can I get to it to clean it.

Hi,

The volume control 'encoder' is probably either faulty or dirty.

Try this first, (if you want to).

Disconnect the power from your receiver. Remove the top cover on your VSX-D608. Remove and pull out the black plastic knob (volume control) located on the front of your receiver. Look behind the volume control and you'll see a small board with the encoder mounted on it. Undo the screws holding the board and gently pull out the board. Gently use a small flat head screw driver and push/pry (be careful, you do not want to break them) away the 4 lugs that are holding the top cover on the encoder in place. Then gently pull out the knob which separates the assembly. Using an electronics contact cleaner spray (this can be purchased from electronics stores, do not use WD-40 or similar water displacement and lubricating products as these leave residues), spray and gently clean the inside of the encoder. Be very careful not to bend the small fingers located inside the unit. Sometimes there is some 'gunk' inside that is hard to clean so you need to use the cleaner and spray a few times. When dry, install the volume control back and push the 4 small lugs back into place. Rotate the control back and forth to ensure it moves smoothly. Install the board back into place, replace the top cover on the unit and plug the unit back in. Test it to make sure it works correctly.

If the above seems a bit daunting , buy a new encoder part # ASX7004 (not 100% sure on this point as cannot find out exactly but if AWX7386 is stamped on the encoder it is no longer available and the ASX7004 is the replacement for it. (AWX7836 is the part # used on VSX model # before and after yours, so I made an assumption about your as I couldn't find anything about your particular part) If there is a different number stamped on the encoder 'Google' it to get the correct part). Here is a link, there are others but nearly all say 'out of stock' http://alltronicmarketplace.com.sg/asx70... You'll have to desolder the encoder from the board assembly and then solder in the new one. The link also shows what it looks like.

Update (04/07/2020)

Part # ASX7004 is no longer available from Pioneer. It is a 24 pulse-per-rotation rotary encoder. An equivalent part is Bourns PEC16-4025F-N0024 available from DigiKey for $2.08 + shipping (Canadian)

Amazing, such an easy fix. All good now, this was for my lg DVD I’ve had for 10 years now, so glad I didn’t get rid of it . Thank you !!

If you know how to unsolder/solder this is a 10 minute repair. Here is the original part I removed and the Bourns replacement which actually fits better than the original:

It looks like the part you want is a CAR AUDIO ENCODER WITH PUSH PIONEER VOLUME SEARCH TRACK. Pioneer Part #CSD1168. The Pioneer site refers you to this supplier, but you can find a few others as well

You can search rotary encoders at Digikey but the push button may make it hard to find a 3rd party replacement.

According to the parts list for the head unit, the volume control is a CSD1168 encoder (example only to show what it looks like - here's another supplier to show price in $US)

Given that it also has a push button switch integrated with it, disassembling it to clean the rotary encoder component may be difficult without causing problems when it comes to reassembling the encoder, so it may be easier to simply replace the encoder unit.

You would need to remove the head unit from the vehicle and then open it up to gain access to a point where you could unsolder the encoder from the board and solder in the new one, then reassemble everything and make sure that it works. You would have to do all of this anyway if you simply wanted to try to clean it as well.

The volume control on my Pioneer MVH-S312BT has been giving me fits for quite a while now. I ordered a Bourns PEC16-4025F-N0024 Rotary Encoder from Digi-Key only to find out it won't fit my radio. I wish I knew what the correct part would be to fix my situation. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer. I've tried washing it out with some mass air flow sensor cleaner that helps but it's not a fix.

Update (10/01/2022)

Spraying the cleaner in the volume control wasn't working as well as it did at first and not knowing anyway to find a replacement, I decided to try unsoldering it and following the fix from the YouTube video I posted above. That seems to have worked. I wiped the inside of the control with some rubbing alcohol and just slightly raised the wiper blades a little before putting it back together and soldering it back in. That seems to have fixed my problem. For how long I won't know for awhile.

Thanks for the links. Looks like with the prices they're charging, it would cost about $20 by the time shipping was added.

I might have to do what this YouTube video shows - un-solder the volume control from the board so I can open it up and clean the contact area really good and see what happens.

Pioneer deck volume control doesn’t work. easy fix.

Hi,

I'm having the same issue here with my Panasonic sa-he100. The volume knob goes random all the time.

The part # is RRV16B24304A but it seems discontinued.

Can somebody point me out to what exactly I need to replace it with.

It look very much like the one @vyengr posted.

That part is also a rotary encoder but I don't know how many pulses per rotation. 24 ppr should work, but if you count the clicks when your spin the shaft through one complete rotation you'll know for sure. Then you'll need to find an equivalent with the same footprint, shaft configuration and length. That may take a bit of digging as there are many variations. Here is a good place to start:
