I have tried using isopropyl alcohol 99.8% . i have gone to swab the optical lens with a q-tip and put the cd back in. I can usually hear the drive start up when i go to close but it seems to not do that as i close it. Have i done something wrong when i have gone to clean it?

Hi @xxdeadeye101xx ,

The lens in the drive may be dirty or covered with dust.

This is perhaps why it can't read the disc properly, so it is searching the disc trying to read it. This is the clicking you hear as the lens tracks back and forth.

You need to clean the lens using a Q-Tip moistened with IPA 90%+ (Isopropyl Alcohol - available at most electronics parts stores).

The first part of this video shows what to do.

Hi @xxdeadeye101xx ,

Verify that the disc has rotated after it has been inserted.

Take note of the position of anything written etc, on the disc label when placing the disc on the tray, close the tray and if you can't hear the disc spin up eject the disc and check its' position to see if it moved at all.

Also check that the drive is 'visible' in My Computer.

Try using a microfiber cloth or lens cleaning cloth and some isopropyl alcohol to clean the lens. Otherwise it's probably banjaxed. Component-level repair is generally not done on PC parts, especially optical drives, which are pretty complex mechanically. I've had a good amount die on me for various reasons; bearing fails, laser carriage or tray gets jammed/derailed, etc. Something just gets tired and gives up the ghost, you know how it is.

Send it back if it's in warranty. If not, CD/DVD writer drives are not expensive, one can be had for $30 or so, and replacing one is generally trivial.

I am trying to load ghostbusters on blu ray on a HP laptop with an LG DVD drive but it makes a ticking and clunking noise when the disc is loading and the computer doesn’t recognise the disc. Can someone help me?

If you are talking a HDD, the drive is toast. The clicking is because it is trying to locate track 0. It cannot find it because either that track is damaged or the track 0 sensor is bad. You can only replace the HDD. It is not repairable for any reasonable cost.

If you are talking an optical disk, it is either the disk itself, the laser, or circuitry. Cleaning the laser might help. If not, the assy needs replacing. Same for circuitry.
