Kenmore is a popular appliance brand commonly sold by Sears, but Sears does not manufacture any of the appliances themselves. Instead, they source that out and have other manufacturers make their appliances for them. Kenmore refrigerators are made by a variety of different manufacturers including LG, Electrolux, GE, and Whirlpool.

kenmore 596.69928011 refrigerator not cooling

My model has the freezer in the bottom. The fridge was unplugged for six months - located at a cottage. When restored power, the fridge seemed to be working, inside light and fan were working.

Fridge is about 6-7 years old and has never been a problem although water was collecting in the freezer floor which I assumed was due to plugged drain.

Took off back panel, fan is working blowing air and the compressor is warm.

Accessed the cooling coils from inside the freezer, taking off the interior panel. The coils are not cold or cool - room temperature.

I have no idea where to start. This is the second fridge that has stopped cooling in the past 8 years. Is this due to being unplugged in a uheated building over the winter?

Any help would be greatly appreciated-

Hi @steveont2018 ,

I was talking about the evaporator unit (not the evap tray for the defrost melt water sorry if I misled you) located inside the freezer compartment behind a panel. The one you mentioned "Accessed the cooling coils from inside the freezer, taking off the interior panel. The coils are not cold or cool - room temperature."

It should get icy cold and the evaporator fan draws air across it to cool down the freezer and the fridge.

This is the drier. It is located near the compressor.

You'll need the right gear to test the sealed system, the kind that fridge technicians carry, as you might need to "break' into the sealed system without losing any refrigerant to test the pressure (unless your system has service valves in the line to test the pressure) and to replace the drier IF that's the problem, you need to evacuate the refrigerant, replace the drier, create a vacuum in the sealed system and then replace the refrigerant and then test it etc.

One for the experts I think.

Here's a video that shows how to replace the drier to give an idea of what I mean.

Hi @steveont2018

If the compressor is running and the evaporator is not getting icy cold to the touch then there is a problem with the "sealed system", i.e. compressor, a lack of refrigerant or perhaps a faulty or clogged dryer.

Is there any "oil" around the compressor area which may indicate a leak?

You may have to get the sealed system pressure tested to find out what the problem is.

Thanks for the advice Jayeff. There is no sign of oil below or on the compressor . The tray beneath the fan(to left of compressor) had a brown waxy substance with mould on surface. The tray is white plastic. If this the evaporator tray? Where is the dryer located and what does it look like? Wish I could post a picture here.

Thx
