Can I use solvents like mineral spirits to clean asphalt from my USB?

I'm a general contractor doing industrial cleaning. I work with a variety of products and chemicals including asphalt. My phone case doesn't protect my USB-C port so I have asphalt build up in there. I've tried toothpicks and safety pins and compressed air and many other things with little success. I normally use solvents like mineral spirits and WD-40 to dissolve asphalt when cleaning but I'm hesitant to pour solvents in my USB port. I'm about to just try it anyway. Any thoughts on the matter? Also, the asphalt had been transferred to all of my charger cords. My main question is "Will pouring solvents into my USB port short circuit anything or permanently mess anything up?"

I have tried Isopropyl Alcohol....the problem is that it doesn't break down the asphalt. I ended up taking a risk by going ahead and cleaning the port with mineral spirits without disconnecting the battery. I turned the phone off, put a drop of mineral spirits into the end of my unplugged charger cord, and inserted the cord into my phone about 100 times, occasionally adding another drop of MS. Then I used a toothpick to scrape the deepest parts of the port. I then used Isopropyl Alcohol 91% to clean out the nasty dissolved asphalt from the port. And BAM! Clean USB port! I used the combined advice from numerous sources in the best step by step order I could think of to achieve my goal. I probably should have disconnected the battery to be safe but my phone still works so I'm good.

Hi @mojojoejoe ,

As I don’t know the conductivity or corrosiveness of the various solvents you mentioned, you could try using Isopropyl Alcohol 90%+ (spray pack) and see if that works. I do know that this doesn’t harm electronics, (see recommendation below) IPA 90%+ is available from electronic parts stores and some pharmacies - do not use “rubbing alcohol” as this is sometimes only 70%IPA or less, can contain scents and is not as effective.

I do however, strongly recommend that you disconnect the battery before doing this as you do not want to create anymore problems than what you already have.

Here’s a link to the Google Pixel 2 XL Battery Replacement guide, which may be of some help. You don’t have to remove the battery, only disconnect it from the systemboard.

As always when handling electronics be gentle and stay focused on what you’re doing.

Good luck with the repair.
