Why does my screen go black when the phone is too cold?

This started back in November, My phone would get too cold and would have a flickering screen. I tried many factory resets but no such luck. I switched to another phone for a while but am back to the S7. If the phone temperature is too cold the phone screen goes completely black and I can’t see. I literally have to place my phone a heater in order for the screen to light back up. Everything else is still functional I just can see what I am doing when the phones internal temperature is too cold. (was in the 60’s this week and it still was too cold or the screen to work)

What can I replace for this to work?

Mine does it too. It started when I left it in cold. It dinner and flickered two thirds at bottom. Top fine. Then yesterday it goes to black two thirds bottom. I remember where the slide buttons are so I can answer it. The hair dryer heats it and I can use it for 2 minutes. There should be a recall. No more Samsung for me. It's from China anyway

@thefreemans2010 I switched to pixel after all this

My S7 is doing the same. When the battery/phone temperature is below 32 centigrade, 2/3 of the bottom screen goes black (after flickering for a minute).

I suspect this is something related to the screen flex not doing right contact, but I could not open this son of a glitch yet....it's too difficult without the proper tools !!

Interesting Tip: In developer mode, you can enable a second screen simulator, kind helps to have an overall view of the screen, and still use some functions.

Another thing that helped me is to cast my screen to my Chromecast.

I have tried the solutions below like bending the phone and enabling hardware overlays...no luck at all.

I would appreciate it if you write me down when you find any alternate solution.

My Samsung S7 display first started to flicker, around 1 year after I bought it. It was outside, with a temperature probably around 10-15 degrees (Celsius). Reducing the screen luminosity did the trick for some time. But actually the problem slowly got worse and worse, over the next 2 years. Then, a couple of weeks ago (age 3 years), the lower third part of the display totally turned black. Maybe one week later, around the second third (in the middle of the display) also started to flicker and become darker and black. Now only the top 2cm area is working normally. I'm going to try to have my phone opened and maybe I'll try to get a new AMOLED display. I'll report about it later, here.

Hi @akeyes ,

When the screen is black, is there still are display visible if you shine a torch at an angle close to the screen? I’m not quite sure from your question if there is or not.

If there is then there is a screen backlight problem.

Cold contracts, heat expands.

if the screen backlight fails in the cold in may be a backlight power supply problem on the motherboard, (faulty soldered connection perhaps), a display flex cable connection problem at the motherboard end or in the screen itself

Here’s a link to the ifixit Samsung Galaxy S7 Ekran Değişimi guide, which may be of some help in checking the motherboard and flex cable motherboard connection for any obvious problems.

As a DIY repair you may have to install a new display to determine where the problem is, either in the display or back in the motherboard.

@jayeff There is a flickering until the phone goes black. Additionally the top half inch of the screen stays at the normal lighting while the rest of the screen flickers and goes black. So I can literally only see the top notification bar and nothing else.

Hi @akeyes ,

It does seem like a faulty backlight connection in the LCD screen.

Can you see if the display is still there when using a torch, it will be very faint? You didn't say.

As I said you may have to replace the LCD screen to prove where the problem is.

I have the same problem with my S7! Top half inch stays at normal lighting while the bottom either flickers with dark horizontal lines or goes completely black when it's cold. Sometimes when it's borderline cold I can lower the screen brightness and be able to see flickering, but if I turn the brightness up it goes completely black. However if it's too cold then turning down the brightness won't help either.

Haven't tried the flashlight

Ive had the same problem with every samsung S version phone ive had....

I have been having a similar problem, although I have not associated it with the cold (although our house is usually cool).

It started about a month ago with some horizontal flickering and graying, and then suddenly about 1/4 of the bottom of the screen went black and stayed black ever since. The rest of the screen was normal most of the time, with occasional graying/flickering. Now, as of this morning, only about 1/2 inch at the top is visible. I rebooted it once and it relit for awhile, but after putting it down for awhile and going back to it, it was still black. So now looking for fixes.

Haven't tried heating or bending yet, although over the last couple of years I get a warning that the CPU is getting too warm (I carry it in my pocket, screen side out so it doesn't keep selecting stuff by body contact).

FIXED!!! Definitely faulty wiring, I have/had the same issue. I was just pulling my case off to warm up my phone to see it and I ‘pushed' or ‘bent' the top of the phone back (like if you were trying to snap it in half pushing metal side to screen side in the middle and screen side to metal side at the ends) and it suddenly went normal!! No banding no black lower half!! So somewhere in the phone is a loose connecting that gets lost when the metal contacts in the cold. Wondering if other people like me usually remove their case from the bottom……

U have just saved me $150 for screen repair..as soon as I bent it or tried to the screen cleared & is brighter than ever!!

I've got the exact same problem with my S7. Five minutes on a space heater just so I can use it for three. Unfortunately this fix is not working for me

tarafından

I'm glad I'm not the only one. Well that sounds bad I just mean that I wouldn't have seen this fix! But I have the EXACT same problem. Samsung S7. It has a hairline crack in the screen which I don't even notice, so I thought that preceded and/or was the cause of this issue. I'm just reading this so I haven't tried the fix yet. So I'm going to push in the back middle by the top (foward), while pushing the front corners towards the back? I hope I get this right...

tarafından

Nope....I'm not having much luck here. What a bummer. I've been trying in both directions. If there's any other hint to this I'd be really happy to hear it. As in...should I be doing this on the vertical ends? Or just side to side while looking at the phome? If the latter...were your fingers more towards the top, middle or bottom? Sorry to be a pain...but I'll try anything at this point...I just don't want to break it! ....thanks ahead for any more assistance :)

This is usually due to a very small damage in the screen itself. Usually resulting for from physical damage like a drop.

The screen is usually only sligthly danaged which is why you get this odd behaviour with the temperature changes. Some screens are the opposite and works better in cold when slightly damaged as such.

In most cases a new screen will resolve the problem. Similar issue can happen with any phones with screen damage. In many cases you may just have no image at all from a minor lcd damage so in a way your kinda of lucky that it still had some image.

I think I found a temporary solution for this, of course as you all might know, heating the phone solves the problem temporarily until it cools downs again, but what I learned is that even though it's bottom part that's gone black, the issue is actually with the top of the screen, because that's where all the circuits that connects it to the motherboard are located, so if you heat the top part of the screen, you'll notice that the black part will disappear quickly and will remain that way for a longer period, also, you can use an App called CPU overload, it helps heat up the phone from the inside by running some heavy calculations, and that also helps, try to keep the phone somewhere hot like in the inner pockets of your jacket when it's cold. and yes, I'm using my S7 now to post this answer.

Don't try fix your screen! There is a simple solution.

Go to Settings > About Phone > System information and press Build Number again and again until a prompt for your pin pops up. Scroll down to developer options and turn on ‘Disable Hardware Overlays' under hardware-accelerated rendering. It fixed mine.

So this is not a permanent fix but it works for me.. If you have a heating pad if you turn it to low medium put phone on pad and fold it in half for like 1-2 minutes it fixes screen

tarafından

And how can you do any of this if you can't see your screen?

tarafından

Heat it wi56h a hairdryer etc and it will reappear

After reading some of your posts I will tell you what I did.

Disable Hardware Overlays - no such luck.

Looked at the cost of the other solutions that I would be willing to do myself, ranged 150 bucks.

So I bought a refurbished $150 pixel and dumped samsung.

Couldnt be happier. No more phone issues like I had with samsung.

In case you tried everything and for some reason you still need to use your S7, alternatives to screen fix:

-Cast your screen to chromecast. You can see the whole screen on your TV.

-Charge your phone during the night, and place it over your router without case. In the morning you screen will work for an hour or so.

-Enable second screen option simulator:

Enable Developer Mode (Settings - About Phone - Click build number many times)

In the screen/video section, enable screen simulator.

You can see a small, real-time second screen and place it where your physical screen still works.

In touch section, you can enable a feature to show where your fingers are in the touchscreen. This also helps.

Having the same issue on my OnePlus 6t. Bottom part of the screen flickers and then goes completely black when outside in the cold.

Anyone know an app that will push the display up to a set point?

There's an App that helps rotate the screen upside down, but if you want to resize the screen you'll need root access, otherwise, try heating the top part of your screen whenever it goes black, because that's where the circuits are, and that's where the issue is, also use CPU Overload App, to keep the phone warm, but don't keep it running all the time it will drain your battery and overheat your phone.
