I have a similar fridge. It was one of the worst purchases I’ve ever made. The icemakers are prone to failure and sometimes it makes sense to replace it. But before you do that, make sure you check the obvious and other components before replacing it. I doubt there’s anything wrong with the controller. If it fails, then usually a bunch of other things will fail too. As for sensors, most ice makers have sensors built into the actual ice maker mechanism.
First, check the ejector arm. Sometimes it gets stuck from ice or it can get dislodged or misaligned. Make sure it moves freely. This is an easy check.
Second, reset the refridgerator using the front panel, instead of unplugging it. Once reset, perform a diagnostic to check for any error codes. Also, check the temperature of the icemaker from the diagnostic panel and your own reading using a thermometer. You can also just fill the ice tray with some water and check if it freezes in a few hours.
Third, make sure there’s no ice build up in the back of the ice maker’s compartment. If you see ice, turn off the icemaker using the front panel for several hours. If the ice has cleared, then turn on the ice maker.
Fourth, if you can’t find anything wrong, then it’s time to purchase or try to repair the ice maker. As a strong suggestion, don’t pay for a branded part. It makes no difference in quality and you can save a ton of money. A new aftermarket icemaker is around $50 or less on eBay or Amazon.
Here’s the manual if you need help performing the front panel.

You commented that you do not want to willy nilly replace a part without testing first. I understand that completely. But sometime you just can’t be certain. I had this same problem and went with RepairClinic.com because they offer full refund if the part purchased did not fix the problem. They also offer full guarantee on the part for one year.
I do not work for RepairClinic nor receive compensation from them. I’m just a satisfied customer.

I have the same problem with a similar model Whirlpool. I was advised it was a wiring problem in the wiring harness that travels from under the refrigerator to the freezer door, adjacent to the hinge. He repaired wiring but problem remained. I was told he has to order a new freezer door, which has a six weeks arrival time. (REALLY) I purchased an extended warranty which is covering door cost but I am concerned it is not door issue. Any recommendations?

Hi Tracey,
Yes, I was able to finally fix the problem. We replaced the whole ice maker assembly, but I don't really believe that was the issue as I still had the problem. Then we replaced the water inlet valve at the bottom of the fridge ( I had earlier replaced the more complex valve in the ceiling of the fridge but that had not done it either). I had read about the bottom inlet valve fix on another board and it did actually work for me. Hope it does for you as well.

Whirlpool French Door WRX988SIBM03 ice maker issue here.
Mine seems to shut off or very slowly make ice.
No error codes - Tests 56, 57, 58, & 59 are all good.
We think the issue may be the main control board so I just ordered one.
Here's the diagnosis.
I reset fridge using 3 different methods: unplugging, throwing circuit breaker, and turning off cooling.
None seem to remedy this issue with slow ice making.
Ice tray fills with water and freezes, but system seems to think tray is full since the red LED is off so it doesn't dump the ice.
Disconnect/reconnect plug in upper left door, the LED lights up and will harvest the ice eventually (depending on temp of ice/heater status, etc.)
Then LED goes out again disabling/slowing ice harvesting.
If I wait for ice, I can manually harvest using test 57 advancing SW3 once hearing the sounds of ice falling followed by water filling the tray.
Thus something is shutting off power to the IR level sensor dumb boards.
I say a main control board.

@scrowi14 Scott, your's seems to be the same issue as mine. My water system works fine and ice tray fills and freezes. Did your LED go out at all or was it always lit?
