GS65 Fan rattling noises reported by many users. how to fix?

Hello,

the GS65 model is a pretty popular gaming machine but is plagued by malfunctioning fans. After about 1 month of use, buyers report one (or both) of the fans start making rattling noises. Can you create an MSI GS65 dissasembly guide, including replacing/fixing the fan if possible? I am considering buying this machine, but am reluctant to do so unless i at least know it’s user-fixable.

Hi @joe_q ,

Most repair guides on ifixit are made by people just like you.

If you feel like creating a fan replacement guide for your model laptop if you get one and when you need to repair it then here’s a link that may be of some help.

Dare To Repair: How To Create a Guide.

In the meantime here’s a link to a video that shows the teardown of a MSI GS65 laptop. From about 10:00 minutes on in the video the fans can be seen being removed from the motherboard.

Hopefully this is of some help.

@joe_q chances of it being torn down by the iFixit team are slim. Remember that their teams are busy with all kind of projects. Now, this isn’t to say it is not going to happen but chances are slim. Also consider that the devices that are being tore down are purchased by iFixit. Maybe you could purchase a MSI GS65 and send it to them and hopefully one of their great techs would find the time to tear it down. Of course, you can purchase one and do your own teardown and post it so the rest of the community gets to see it. It’ll make you a trendsetter for sure. https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/new

Fixing GS65 fan is relatively easy. Disassemble the laptop and heatsink assembly (very small screws) and pull your fan outward. What you will see is a small metal shaft that comes out of a small magnetic hole. Put a very very small amount of olive oil in the metal flange and reassemble the blade assembly. Try rotating it and do not put much pressure while reassembling it (this is the main trick). Rotate the fan and you are good to go.

While I moved away from considering the GS65 as a candidate machine for purchase, I think your advice is good except for the olive oil solution. Vegetable oil breaks down in a short time and turns rancid, turning into a sticky goo instead of a fine lube that is required in a fan. This will cause more problems than will solve in the long run. A drop of bike chain lube or any household appliances oil should be much better. Motor oil could also work if you have some around (not the used one).
