How worried should I be about hardware damage? (E6220)

When I was investigating the possibility of using an E6220 palmrest on an E6230 with a trackpad swap (which required disassembly so I can see how viable the palmrest is for a transplant), I came across this. Yikes - I don’t know how long it’s been like this!

I do not know much about the laptop beyond it being purchased as a machine for the accessories which I needed. It has always run fine, but I did not put that cable back into service, as I had a spare. Even if I did not, I would not have used it again and replaced it.

While the machine works fine, how worried should I be about hardware damage that could be serious? It hasn’t ever failed me, but I am a little worried about it seeing that damage to the flatflex now.

Hi @nick ,

It doesn’t look as though the insulation covering each wire has broken or if it has that it has broken and exposed two wires at the same point.

If there is such exposure of the wires it “may” cause or have caused problems because a short circuit between two wires can cause damage, but that should have shown itself somehow by now

Other than that since it is in a low voltage circuit and not used in a circuit where “induction” between the wires may cause problems due to incorrect separation between the wires then I doubt that there has been any hardware problems created.

It is better not to reuse it though, just in case the insulation breaks down further if the cable was straightened out etc

Yeah I replaced it already - my concern was more to do with the odds the machine has other damage hiding since it blew up so badly.

If it was just warm on that line I'd still be nervous, but not to the extent seeing that damage did. I'm going to have to keep an eye on it and if it acts up, I can already tell the damage may be expensive - I have never seen a flatflex blow like that. I think it just made me as nervous as it did because I don't know the history of the machine and can't make a judgement based on history.

@nick

Where was it near that caused it to go like that?

It seems as though it was bent or wrapped around around something and maybe it was too close to it.

Maybe it was already a replacement that was installed incorrectly or perhaps it was a replacement that was like that in the first place as it was the best or only one available at the time.

As you say nothing else seems to be wrong with the laptop so all you can do is check what happens with the one that you installed. The cable is designed for 80C and 60V so whatever it was near didn't go past that temp otherwise it would have been damaged more. The only thing that gets to 80C is the CPU or if it were a short circuit somewhere, causing excess current therefore heat the problem would still be there.

@jayeff It is likely pre-existing as I have taken very good care of it under my ownership - I never took the palmrest off before to see that. I have had it since at least 12/23/19 personally. I don't baby it, but I don't abuse it. I cut the bad cable to prevent reuse, but not to remove clues.

Beyond that, I know nothing else since the USPS tracking is long expired. I just noticed it 8 months after I got it because of the palmrest check I did to see if I can get away with it. It was worked on by someone who stripped the lower pan screw hole so badly I need to tape the cover on. It wasn't very well loved by the first owner(s) - which is where my concern came from having that topped off with a damaged flatflex. It has history.

The CPU and trackpad are far away enough it would need to happen through the board acting as a heatsink. You never know though - I may have caught it before it took the machine out. I'm thinking it was a bad install by the person who stripped the lower pan screw point or they reused a junker as you said.
