Sprite can exploded on my Surface Book 2

It was a bad day for my laptop. I had it in the trunk of my car to keep it hidden while I ran errands after work, and when I got home, I found a Sprite can had exploded and drenched EVERYTHING back there. Including my laptop. I ran inside and wiped the excess fluid off and grabbed some isopropyl to wash off as much as I could, but the speakers are messed up, as well as some of the keys on the keyboard and the touch pad. It looks like it's a pain to get this laptop apart, but are there other ways I could clean those components?

Hi @srarmn89 ,

If the laptop is still working to a degree and if you haven’t already done so, I suggest that you backup your data to an external HDD as soon as possible before the laptop fails even further, then start thinking about how to fix the problems.

The impurities in the liquid causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the laptop’s operating design and could damage the components. The corrosion starts immediately and is ongoing until it is completely cleaned away

After you have backed up your data , turn off the laptop and do not try to charge or to turn it on again and then remove the battery as soon as possible from the laptop to minimize any further damage.

Then you need to dis-assemble the rest of the laptop and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ (available at electronics parts stores) to remove all traces of corrosion and liquids. If possible do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is only 70% IPA or less, can contain additives and is not as effective. If you do have to use it check the label to verify the amount of IPA. The higher the percentage of IPA the better

Here is a link that describes the process. Electronics Water Damage

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted pcb be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the board. Remove the shields that may be covering some components as the water may have got in under there. The ends of any flex cables and their connectors need to be cleaned as well

Hopefully after you have done all this the laptop might possibly work correctly again.

Here is a link to the ifixit Microsoft Surface Book 2 13.5 guide for repairing your laptop. As you can see the repairability score of 1/10 means that this is not easy.

If this process seems too daunting, take your laptop to a reputable, professional laptop repair service, experienced in liquid damage repair and ask for a quote for a repair. If you decide to do this, do it sooner than later.
