How to safely disassemble watch while bootlooping?

Watch previously experienced water damage 3 weeks ago. I opened the caseback and left it in a bag of silica beads for 2 weeks to dry. It seemed to worked fine afterwards... up until until today.

Watch has been stuck in a bootloop for about an hour. I want to disassemble the watch and remove the battery so I can safely clean the insides with isopropyl alcohol.

Watch won't turn off. I am concerned about damaging the watch if I try disassembling the watch while it is on. How should I go about disassembly? Will the battery be damaged if I just let it bootloop until it runs out of charge?

Occasionally, the watch is able to boot up properly for a few seconds before going into a bootloop again. If I try to power off when it's able to boot up properly, sometimes it stays powered off for maybe 30 seconds, other times it starts bootlooping again immediately after I press power off.

Watch is out of warranty

Hi @dave33211

The safest course of action would be to let the battery discharge to a point where the watch turns off by itself and then open and disassemble to watch to fix it.

Silica beads etc won't solve the problem of corrosion caused by the water coming into contact with the metals on the motherboard in the watch, especially since power is still available on the motherboard, (electrolysis). Turning the watch off doesn't disconnect power from the board, it simply places the watch in an extremely low power state, same as in mobile phones.

The impurities in the water causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the watch's operating design and could damage the components. The corrosion starts immediately and is ongoing until it is completely cleaned away

First do not try to charge or to turn on your watch and once it has stopped you need to dis-assemble the watch and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ (available at electronics parts stores) to remove all traces of corrosion and water. If possible do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is only 70% IPA or less, can contain additives and is not as effective. If you do have to use it check the label to verify the amount of IPA. The higher the percentage of IPA the better

Here is a link that describes the process. Electronics Water Damage

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted pcb be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the board. Remove the shields that may be covering some components as the water may have got in under there. The ends of any flex cables and their connectors need to be cleaned as well

Hopefully after you have done all this the watch might possibly work correctly again.

Just open it up and disconnect the battery. It’s on a push on connector so will just pop off. Once the screws are out holding the board in place don’t use anything metal inside the watch. A fingernail or plastic spudger should be all you need.

Hi @strongbow,

I may be wrong but looking at the ifixit guide above, there's a fair bit to remove from the watch before access to the battery is possible.

Cheers

@jayeff piece of cake pal, did one last weekend without a guide and nothing to worry about or complicated to be honest.
