Why my phone cannot communicate on USB port?

My phone's USB port stopped working.

I cannot use this port for data communication any more and the non factory chargers cannot charge the phone even if they are QC 3.0 compliant.

I can charge my phone only with its factory charger.

Does this mean that my USB port is broken?

As I can see the USB port is integrated onto the motherboard.
Can I replace the USB port separately, or I have to replace the whole motherboard?

Hi @tofpete

In the phone go to Settings > Developer options > Default USB Configuration > File Transfer.

For Developer Options go to Settings > About phone > tap MIUI version 10 times to enter

Update (09/01/23)

@tofpete

Use a strong light and a magnifying glass to visually inspect the USB port to make sure that all the pins are there and that they're all straight and parallel with each other and not bent, broken or missing.

Also check that there's no debris in the port enclosure that may be preventing a good electrical connection especially on the two centre pins as these are the data pins.

If there is debris in the port enclosure, do not use a pin to remove it as you may cause electrical damage to the phone. Try using a vacuum cleaner instead. If it won't come out, try using a sharpened wooden toothpick

If the port seems to be OK, try the following:

Insert a USB cable into the phone but do not connect the other end of the USB cable to anything at all. Leave it free.

Next firmly hold the phone in one hand and then grab hold of the USB cable plug that is inserted in the phone with the other hand and gently, (stress gently) try to move the plug up and down and side to side to check if you can feel any movement in the port connector at all, indicating that it may be loose from the board.

If the tests above seem to be OK then the phone will have to be opened and further tests conducted to find out what's wrong.

I've already checked this and it is set to file transfer as you suggested but it doesn't help.

I still cannot communicate with a PC and if I plug an usb headphone it doesn't detect it however this was working fine earlier.

Hi jayeff,

Thanks for the detailed answer.

I checked the usb port but cannot see any physical damage in it and there is no debris either.

I did the investigation process you described but cannot feel any movement, so I think I need to open the phone body to see if there is any visible damage.

If there isn't any visible issue then I will need to replace the motherboard?

The problem is that my phone is not a redmi note but a simply Mi Note 10 and this phone doesn't have a separated charge board. This phone's usb port is part of the motherboard so I cannot replace only the charge port board separately.

I will open the phone and check if I can see anything in it.

Go into developer options and enable usb debugging. Close settings then try it.

Hi @strongbow,

Apparently the OP had already tried this - see their comment in my answer above.

They didn't respond to my updated answer to that comment so I don't know where it's at, at the moment,.

Cheers

Hi strongbow,

As jayeff wrote, the usb settings in the developer menu cannot solve this problem.

@tofpete All I read was file transfer which is different to usb debugging. Usb debugging allows usb connections without having to select options on the phone.
