Where is the temperature sensor component located exactly?

gtx 1070 ROG Strix

Had this card for years and still works great. Recently started doing this thing where it shows it reaching temperatures as high as 90c at idle. Logically the first thing that comes to mind is that it needs new thermal paste or pads etc. I guarantee this is not the case. The card is still cool to the touch. I confirmed this after running it till it reached that temp then turning off and removing the card. I am nearly certain it has a bad thermal sensor, which is why I would like to know where they are so I can buy and solder new ones. All help is appreciated thanks!

I took apart the card today and found a component with poor contact with the board. Fixed that, and Replaced the thermal paste and pads just in case. It's working great again! Idle temps are at an average of 35c and it's running great while gaming hasn't got past 50c. It can even handle a stable overclock.

Hi @gabagabado

Chances are that the temp sensor is inbuilt the GPU chip itself.

CPU's have a built in thermocouple that senses the core temp of the CPU so no doubt GPUs are the same.

If it's getting too warm it could be due to faulty drivers or vram or overclocking perhaps causing the GPU to work harder than it should.

No doubt the fans on the card will also have temp sensors (thermistors) in them as well.

Are the fans on high speed when the temp rises?

No, fans were spinning faster, but not to the level of speed it should've been while at 90c.
