The March 2015 update of Apple's 13" MacBook Pro Retina Display, model A1502, features fifth-generation Intel Core i5 and i7 processors and introduces the Force Touch trackpad.

After replacing battery, computer immediately dies unless plugged in?

I installed a new battery, following the guide here: MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Early 2015 Battery Replacement. Everything seemed to go smoothly enough. Then I charged the battery up to 100%+, and reset SMC, but the computer dies immediately when unplugged.

I'm attaching images from CoconutBatttery, which makes the battery look healthy? What am I missing? Any ideas?

Sounds like the power rails from the battery to the board are damaged.

The MOSFET switching logic.

Is there something actionable I can do based on these comments?

I just replaced the battery *again* with another new one. Same thing. Charged to 100% just fine.

@levient - it’s not within the battery, this is the logic within the logic board that controls the powers flow.

Check to make sure the battery is fully connected (you can do so by disconnecting and reconnecting the battery). Sometimes if the connector isn't properly seated you can get partial battery functionality like you've described. Good luck!

Just replaced the battery with *another* battery, just to be sure and still having the same issue. I even bent the ribbon slightly more (nothing extreme) so that the connector hinged more naturally into the socket, and it definitely felt like a better connection, but no dice.

*Incidentally, the people at Microcenter did a $50 diagnosis and said that if I paid them $950 they would replace with another battery, but that Apple mandated that to replace this battery would need to include the top-case, because of the adhesive used. But that doesn't give me any new ideas of what might be wrong.

$950 is an insane amount to charge for a battery replacement on this model! Obviously replacing the top case isn't necessary as you can see since you've replaced the battery yourself. If you've tried two new batteries, and they're properly installed, and the system still powers off when the charger is disconnected, then I would suspect there is an issue with the power logic somewhere on the main logic board. Unfortunately I don't know how to diagnose or resolve that, sorry! Best of luck!
