While Windows 7 is being shown here, the same steps apply in Windows 10 and 11.

Manual configuration is required when using the HP UPD to replace failing legacy drivers on printers setup using a USB cable. These older printers use "USB_001" or "DOT4" depending on the age of the printer. (IMPORTANT: most of the older bulletproof models like the 1012, 1200, 4200 and 4300 series are old enough to require "DOT4")

Find Devices and Printers. The location will vary based on what version of Windows is installed. Search for Control panel and find Devices and Printers.

Click Add a Printer. If your printer uses USB, select Add a Local printer. For networked printers, select Add a Network, Wireless, or Bluetooth printer.

Allow your computer to populate the driver list. Find HP and then locate the driver that says HP Universal Printing (PCL6/PostScript). Select the driver and click Next.

Name your printer, then click Next.
