LED Light Does Not Power On
The LED light does not power on when you hold down the trigger.
Battery is Disconnected
If the battery is disconnected, the LED light will not turn on. Check to make sure the battery is correctly attached with our battery replacement guide. Once the battery is connected properly, press the trigger to see if the light illuminates while the drill spins.
The LED Bulb is Dead
A common reason for the LED light to not turn on is because the bulb is dead. Check to make sure the battery is charged and attached first. If the light is still not working, the bulb may be dead, and you can follow the Makita XPH01 LED Light Replacement guide to change it.
Motor is Unresponsive
The motor is unresponsive when you hold down the trigger.
The Battery is Dead
Make sure the battery is charged before operating the drill. It is possible that the drill will not respond if the charge is too low. Once you check to see if the battery is charged and properly connected, press down on the trigger.
Motor Drill Brushes are Worn Out
After constant use of the drill, the motor drill brushes are likely to wear out. Please follow our guide to change the motor drill brushes.
Trigger Switch Not Working
The trigger will not activate the drill.
Safety Lock Engaged
In order to activate the drill, you must push the trigger down. You cannot press the trigger if the safety lock is engaged. Make sure the safety lock is switched to forward or reverse before operating the device.
The Battery is Dead
The drill will not function if the battery is dead or not properly connected. Make sure the battery is charged and connected to the drill.
The Trigger Assembly has Gone Bad
If the trigger switch pushes down but does not engage the motor, your trigger may be bad.
Forward/Reverse Change Lever has Worn Out
It is a possibility that the forward/reverse change lever has worn out and needs to be replaced. This is indicated by cracked plastic on the change lever itself. Please follow our guide to replace the forward/reverse change lever.
Drill Overheating
The drill becomes very hot when using.
Drill Used for Too Long
When using the drill for a long period of time, the drill starts to heat up. Simply let go of the trigger to stop drilling, and let the drill cool down. Make sure the safety lock is engaged for safety purposes. Once cooled down, you can resume drilling again.
Drill Clutch Slipping
The clutch becomes disengaged.
The Slip-Clutch Setting is Not Right
There are numerical values on the clutch that represent the amount of torque the drill can exert on a screw. Depending on the type of screw, you can set the value of the torque. If the clutch slips before a screw is fully drilled in, it means that the torque value is not high enough. Simply rotate the setting to a higher value. If you drill the screw too deeply, you may want to adjust the setting to a lower value.
Clutch Leaf Spring is Worn Out/Missing
If the clutch does not firmly ‘click’ onto the right gear, it is possible that the leaf spring is worn out or simply missing. It is a common occurrence for someone to open the drill and when reassembling they do not put the leaf spring back into its correct place. Please follow our guide to replace the clutch leaf spring.

It got hot then forward stopped working reverse still works what could the problem be.

Hi, ive got a Makita XPH07 (DPH451). Its become intermittent and pretty much not working at all. Ive replaced the trigger thinking it was that, but the problem still persists making me think its the brushes, except its a brushless drill. The armature doesnt spin easily turning by hand if its meant to? Not sure.. Do yyou know what the problem could be?

Check the condition of the battery contacts in the base of the drill. They get worn/pitted/carbonised with use and whilst the poor connection is able to supply enough power to light the work LED (very, very little) as soon as you ask for enough juice to turn the motor, the resistance is too great and nothing happens. It is very similar to the effect in a car when the accessories, dash lights etc work but the engine won’t turn over - due to a poor battery connection. A new contact assembly is very cheap and easy to change (UK£10 or so).

So the drill I have is fairly new, and it began overheating. I let it rest and it started working again. This problem happened again, but this time it won’t start working again. I’ve tried both batteries and it isn’t helping. I checked the brushes and pushed them down to see if they were the issue. The brushes are still almost fully intact but pushing them down did nothing. What should I check next?

Just fixed my 4 year old Makita 18v battery drill DHP453 after it stopped working suddenly. Very simple fault..broken wire connection to the motor. I have been using a lot on hammer recently so I reckon the wire vibrated so much that it fracture at the solder joint!

Armature; - Try operating the drill and twisting the chuck by hand (in the correct direction). If it starts then: Commutator ring: Is it shiny? If not take it out and clean carefully with some plumber's grade of wire wool. Make sure you clean it carefully afterwards to get rid of all the wire wool bits.
If that fails, What voltage do you get at the brushes when the trigger is pulled max?

Hi I have just bought a new Makita 40v battery but when I pressed the battery indicator no lights light up. Is that normal for a new battery before the first charge. As the other ones I bought always had one light on the indicator before the first charge.

My XPH01 drill will not work with 4.0ah star makita batteries, why is that? The drill has a star marking so I thought it should accept the star battery.

I ha a makita PA14 Cordless drill. The Chuck won't release drill bit. It will only turn a little one way then locks if I turn it the other way it locks again.
