Bag Will Not Seal
Air leaks into the bag after sealing attempt.
Bag Inserted Incorrectly
Make sure the ridges in the textured bag is running perpendicular to the heat strip. The smooth side of the bag must be facing up. Put the setting on moist instead of dry and attempt to seal the bag again. If this does not fix the problem you may have to replace the seal profile.
Seal Profile Too Wet
Pull out the seal profile, dry it off and reinsert into the machine.
Too Much Liquid In Food
Food gets soggy after sealing process.
Freeze your food first before using the appliance. Attempt to seal your food on the moist setting.
If this does not wok, put the food inside another sealed bag and then inside the given FoodSaver bag.
Reminder: Too much liquid inside the pump WILL cause problems. Remember to drain the pump before using if your product isn't working properly.
Device Does Not Vacuum Air Out Of Bag
Bag is slightly bloated and has not been properly sealed.
Gaskets Not Sealing
Take the seal profile out and wash it. Remember to make sure the bag is in the correct position in the device to seal it properly.
Bag Not Positioned Properly
Rotate the bag 90 degrees and insert it again. Make sure the vertical lines on the bag are perpendicular to the machine's heating strip (or seal profile).
Seal Profile Worn Out
Replace the seal profile.
Accessory Hose Malfunctioning
Check to make sure the accessory hose, if in use, is effectively vacuuming air out. If not, open the bottom panel and see if all the vacuum tubes are connected to the pumps.
Vacuum Pump and Diaphragms Not Working
If the machine makes noise, but no air is being vacuumed out of the bag, the vacuum pump and its diaphragms may need replacing.
Red Seal LED Flashing
LED on the front of the device is flashing
Bag Not Inserted Properly or Unit is Overheated
Remove and reinsert your bag slowly. This may also occur when your machine has overheated. Wait ten minutes and try again.
Reminder: Always wait at least twenty seconds between seals.
Device Does Nothing When Bag Is Inserted
The device has a bag inserted and will not seal or vacuum it.
Faulty Power Source
Ensure that the machine is plugged into a functioning outlet and is turned on.
Dip Tray Full
Clean drip tray, dry it, and reinsert into machine.
Device Overheats
Temperature increase can be perceived by laying a hand on the side of the appliance.
Wait ten to fifteen minutes before attempting to use appliance again. Make sure that the appliance is in a well ventilated place and that there are no other electric devices relatively close-by.
Device is Overused
Follow the same procedure above.

I've noticed that the bag sensor flaps seem to hang up and cause the machine to malfunction. There's no real was to access these flaps to clean them.

Edward, I had the same trouble with the sensor flaps. I’d enter a bag to seal it, hold it straight across… cut off a little of the bag… all the tricks to make it work but it just wouldn’t activate the vacuum sealer. Here’s what I did to fix it.
If you turn the sealer over and open the drawer you’ll see there are two floppy plastic pieces. You’ll also see the seal gasket that the drawer gasket seals press and seal against. If the flappers and seal rings are dirty and gummed up the sealer won’t work.
To clean them used a tooth brush (soft bristle) and brushed the goo off the flaps, top bottom and around the seal rings. I used awesome cleaner to spray the parts/pieces in there to clean the gummed up goo. I found that it got pretty wet from the cleaning but it does dry out with a paper towel or thin cotton rag. I think a Q tip might be helpful cleaning and drying in there too.

Just saved me $150! I had this problem with my 4980 and had bought a replacement when I saw this comment. The new one is going back to Costco.

I’m so glad I found your post. You just saved me a heap of time and money. I also noticed when I was looking at those flaps…one had folded down the wrong way. Cleaned and reset the flaps. The Foodsaver hasn’t worked this good in a long time.

This was great! My machine is like brand new! Thank you muchisimo!

Thanks for this! I had similar problems, but 1 thing I can add is my red light was on solid…..1 of the flaps was stuck in the up position…..cleaned everything, as described above, and it works fine again….

I'm happy I found this thread. When I called FoodSaver to find out how to remove the sensor switches for cleaning or replacement, they said there is no access like some other models. After reading this, I wound up using a Q tip dipped in alcohol to reach in and clean the gunk off. The flaps are moving freely again.

I have 2 food savers. Both unit the vacuum/seal function doesn't work.
The bag get vacuumed out, when it switches over to seal. The vacuum in
the bag is released and doesn't seal. The seal button functions ok. But
vac/seal does not Model v3240. What unit is malfunctioning? Where
can I order parts if needed. I’m totally disappointed in your product.

I have a 2100. I think gunk got INSIDE the unit. I can’t seem to find a service manual or video showing how to take apart the unit. I took out the screws on the bottom, including the ones under the feet. I took out the screws on the sides under the lid. Nothing seems to be moving any. I’m assuming there’s some clips somewhere that are just snapped in, but I don’t know if that’s the case or where they are. I don’t want to break things by prying too much searching for them. Seems odd that there isn’t a service manual available.

I have a v4980, the accsry hose wouldn't vacuum (everything else works). I had to open bottom panel. 12v selenoid valve was stuck. (U can test if yours works with a reg. 9v battery by disconnecting it & applying voltage to corresponding wire) If it's working, you'll hear a full click. If no click, it's stuck with gunk. U have to loosen the small board under the motor. If you have a L-shape (or flexible screw driver) U can get to the valve without removing the board. Removing board allows U to simply gain straight access to the four screws holding the air exchange connection. Once U remove the white plastic air exchange attached to the selenoid valve you remove the small plastic bumper on the selenoid valve piston. Do not lose. Use a small flat screwdriver to pull out the piston along with the spring behind it (inside the valve). Clean out gunk on the piston until smooth, clean and dry. Test piston again before putting all back (hold with finger during test, it should retract freely and then release freely).

thanks it worked!

This is the exact selenoid valve. It's easy to clean out. You probably won't need to order one, but this is what it looks like. You don't have to remove the metal part from the board, just the four screws holding the white plastic to the metal valve. You can then get to the piston and clean it.

That happened to me and I found the trough at the back that catches liquid had popped up. Unplugged machine and with the help of a flashlight, I used a butterknife to push it back down. Problem solved.

Model FM5400 series. When using the accessory suction hose vacuum seems weak. Also when vacuum is applied, the main sealer seems to be vacuuming, even though no bag is in it. Any ideas?

Model V375. Motor activates but doesn’t stay runing. Eerythig seems to be in good repair except perhaps the vacuum sensor. Is there a way to clean it or check it or replace it?
Larry Jackson - Yanıt
I faught the appliance for 2 hours and then found your post.
I found that Those floppy plastics are actually the mechanical sensors that were stuck and were not moving back to its normal position so no bag was ever being detected.
Many thanks for your wonderful post.

Unbelievable, but cleaning the flapper switches and hold down allows our machine to operate again. I was completely skeptical and ready to purchase another machine, but thought “what the heck”. Thank you.

My V4980 does not vacuum all the air from the bag and will not automatically seal. I've cleaned the upper and lower gaskets but they are damaged with cracks and chips. The unit draws air through these voids in the gaskets and never gets all the air out of the bag. It seems that the gaskets in this model are non-replaceable. Is that true? Is there a gasket replacement kit from another model that will fit? I'm shocked that these were designed to be a permanent installation without a replacement capability. Please help.

I have a 4860 model that worked the last time I used it. Went to use it again and no vacuum or seal. All the lights worked however. Tried everything. I had no faith in this alcohol cleaning post but tried it before I opted to throw the thing out. IT WORKED!!!! Thank you sooooo much. My unit did not look dirty at all and I am very careful about liquids getting sucked up as I vacuum and seal. I have no idea why it worked but it did.

I have a FoodSaver V4840 that powers down and completely shuts off when I try to seal one end of a bag to make a new bag. In order to get the bag out I need to unplug and replug the unit into the receptacle and then the mechanism opens and permits the bag to be removed. This was intermittent at first but now regardless of the outlet I use, it does the same thing. Any advice? Thanks.
