Roku Will Not Turn On
There is no power to the device.
Power Cable Not Seated Properly
Make sure that you have plugged the power cable in properly. First, remove the power cable from both the wall outlet and the device, and wait approximately twenty seconds. Then, plug the power cord into a wall outlet, ensuring that the plug is seated firmly into the proper outlet. If you are using a power strip or surge protector, be sure that the strip is switched on and plugged in. Next, insert the power cable into the port marked “DC in” on the device, and make sure it is seated firmly.
Faulty Power Cable
If you have inserted the power cable properly but the device still will not turn on, you may have a bad power cable. First, try plugging the cable into an outlet in a different room of your house. You may have a bad electrical outlet! If you are using a surge protector/power strip, try using either a different power strip or a wall outlet. If the Roku still won’t turn on, another thing that you might try in this case is to borrow a power cable from another Roku XD device. If the borrowed power cable works, this probably means that the one that came with your device no longer functions. At this point you need to replace your power cable. Do not attempt to repair your power cable, as this could result in property loss, serious injury, or death.
Faulty Power Port
If you have determined that the power cable is not the source of the problem, you will need to check the solder joints at the power port terminals. If the terminals are loose, they will need to be re-soldered. For help with soldering view the iFixit soldering guide.
If the terminals are broken you will need to replace the power port.
Faulty Motherboard
If you have determined that the neither power cable nor the power port is the source of the problem, then it is possible that one or more integrated components on the motherboard have failed. This is not something that you will be able to fix. You will need to replace the motherboard or replace the Roku.
Remote Not Responding
Remote is in the working range of the Roku and pointed directly at the Roku but the Roku is not responding.
Batteries Are Bad
Replace the bad batteries with new ones.
Remote and Roku Need to Be Reset
Remove batteries from the remote. Hold down every single button on the remote for five seconds. Then, replace the batteries.
Next, unplug the power cord from the Roku, wait for five seconds, plug the power cord back into the Roku, and wait for Roku banner.
Button Contacts Are Dirty
To clean the remote contacts, open the remote following the remote disassembly guide. Then, use Q-tips and rubbing alcohol to clean the contacts on the circuit board and on the rubber pad.
Battery Terminals Are Cracked or Loose
Check the solder joints at battery terminals. If the terminals are loose, they will need to be re-soldered. For help with soldering view the iFixit soldering guide.
If the terminals are broken you will need to replace the terminals.
Faulty IR LED
To check that the LED is functioning, in a dark room, point the remote at a camera ( cellphone camera is easiest )and hold down a remote button. If the IR LED is working, you will see it on your phone’s display screen.
Next, check the solder joints at the LED terminals. If the terminals are loose, they will need to be re-soldered. For help with soldering view the iFixit soldering guide.
If the terminals are broken you will need to replace the LED
Faulty Remote Circuit Board
If you have ensured that the batteries, terminals, and IR LED are not the problem, then it is possible that one or more integrated components on the circuit board have failed. This is not something that you will be able to fix. You will need to replace the circuit board or replace the remote.
Roku Will Not Display Video
You can hear the program, but the screen is blank.
Incorrect RCA Cable Connection
Double check your RCA connections. Make sure the cables are connected to correct color coded jacks on both the Roku and your TV. Red to Red, White to White, and Yellow to Yellow.
HDMI Cable Not Seated Properly
Double check your HDMI connections on both the Roku and your TV. One end at a time, Unplug your HDMI cable from the Roku and your TV, and reinsert ensuring that the cable is seated properly.
Faulty RCA or HDMI Cable
If you have ensured that the cables are hooked up correctly / seated properly, and you still have no video, then replace the cables with new ones.
Faulty RCA Port
If you have ensured that the cables are hooked up correctly / seated properly, and replaced the cables entirely, then it is possible that RCA video port (the yellow one) on the motherboard has failed. You will have to replace the video port.
Faulty Motherboard
If you have ensured that the cables are hooked up correctly / seated properly, and replaced the cables entirely, and you have replaced the RCA video port then it is possible that one or more integrated components on the motherboard have failed. This is not something that you will be able to fix. You will need to replace the motherboard or replace the Roku.
Roku Will Not Play Sound
You can see the program, but there is no sound.
The Volume Is Too Low
Ensure that the volume is not muted or simply turned down too low to hear.
RCA Cables Not Properly Seated
Double check your RCA connections. Make sure the cables are connected to correct color coded jacks and seated properly on both the Roku and your TV.
HDMI Cable Not Properly Seated
Double check your HDMI connections on both the Roku and your TV. One end at a time, unplug your HDMI cable from the Roku and your TV, and reinsert ensuring that the cable is seated properly.
Faulty RCA or HDMI Cable
If you have ensured that the cables are hooked up correctly / seated properly, and you still have no audio, then replace the cables with new ones.
Faulty RCA Port
If you have ensured that the cables are hooked up correctly / seated properly, and replaced the cables entirely, then it is possible that one or both of the RCA audio ports (the red and white ones)on the motherboard have failed. You will have to replace the audio port.
Faulty Motherboard
If you have ensured that the cables are hooked up correctly / seated properly, and replaced the cables entirely, and you have replaced the RCA audio ports, then it is possible that one or more integrated components on the motherboard have failed. This is not something that you will be able to fix. You will need to replace the motherboard or replace the Roku.
Roku Will Not Connect to Wired Internet
The device has power and displays Roku banner, but does not show connectivity over wired internet.
Internet Is Not Available
Make sure that your local internet connection is active and valid. This may require resetting your router or modem.
Ethernet Cable Is Not Properly Seated
If using a wired connection for the Roku XD, check to ensure that the Ethernet cable is fully plugged in on both the Roku side and the source side.
Faulty Ethernet Cable
If the previous step does not solve the problem, the Ethernet cable itself may be damaged or malfunctioning. To test this, you will need another device (computer, laptop, etc.) to plug the Ethernet cable into. If the other device cannot find connectivity through the cable, the cable is malfunctioning and will need to be replaced. If the other device can find it, then reinsert the Ethernet cable, ensuring that the cable is seated properly. and continue.
Faulty Ethernet Port
If previous steps have not resolved a wired connection problem, it is possible that the Ethernet port has failed. You will need to replace the Ethernet port.
Faulty Motherboard
If you have ensured that the cables are hooked up correctly / seated properly, and replaced the cables entirely, and you have replaced the Ethernet port, then it is possible that one or more integrated components on the motherboard have failed. This is not something that you will be able to fix. You will need to replace the motherboard or replace the Roku.
Roku Will Not Connect to Wireless Internet
The device has power and displays Roku banner, but does not show connectivity over wireless internet.
Internet Is Not Available
Make sure that your local WiFi connection is active and valid. This may require resetting your router or modem. Attempt to connect to wireless internet with a different device to ensure connectivity is possible.
Roku Not Connected to WiFi
If the internet is available, but you cannot connect the Roku to it, make sure the Roku XD is set to connect to the correct network, and ensure the password is entered properly.
Faulty WiFi Antenna
If the above steps have not solved the problem, you will either need to rely on a wired connection or to attempt a repair. The WiFi antenna is integrated into the motherboard, so you will need to replace the motherboard or replace the Roku.

My friends Roku starts out working fine but over a hour or so it starts to fade to black. Have your heard of this before? I am suspecting the AC adapter but I know there are a few power management devices in the Roku box as well. Any idea or is it time to belly up and get a new one?
Thanks!
